Though I have not completed chapter 2 I have a lot of thoughts about 1984 so far. Society these days have been known to have lots of known and very supported theories about the current events of our history and the acts of our government. So far with 1984 it clearly states a possible world that we may soon experience.
1984 starts off with a story of a man name Winston who lives in a "utopia"; (or negative utopia), where it is ran by this idea of a leader known as "Big Brother." But Winston goes out and writes a little diary entry, which is not allowed. This idea surprised me, because I would never suspect that writing a diary would be "bad," but with the idea of total control it's understandable why it is not allowed. (People can write down things against their government.
Another thing I would like to write down before I forget is the order of their government. Winston works in the Ministry of Truth which seems to be where their government is organized. Their are different ministries which include :
The Ministry of truth - deals with news, education, fine arts, and entertainment
The Ministry of Peace - Concerns itself with WAR. How ironic.
The Ministry of Love - Deals with law and order - most dangerous
The Ministry of Plenty - deals with economic affairs
The exciting part I read was the structure of the Ministry of Truth. It was depicted as a large pyramidal structure. (pg 4) This could symbolize the past Egyptian symbolism in wealth and power, and god like desires, but I don't know if this is relevant to the story. The fascinating part is that pyramids are the basic symbol for modern day conspiracy theories! Coincidence?
Now I would like to go on with the whole structure of Big Brother who is against a man name Goldstein who praises current democratic ideas such as freedom of speech. Now I am wondering is Big Brother one person? Or is Big Brother a group of people? Their or his/her slogan is :
" WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH"
Now what I wonder is how can anybody POSSIBLY believe that is the way of life? The society is brainwashing kids to point out suspected traitors and training them to be slaves to their system from what I have read. And even the adults are experiencing brainwashing. Winston DOES dislike, or even hate Big Brother which is shown on page 18 when he wrote "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER" subconsciously. BUT he still joined the gang of people who went out and praised Big Brother. And to conclude this long blog about my ideas so far is that Winston had an experience, or connection with a man named O'Brien who showed a facial expression similar to Winston which expressed their hate for Big Brother. Now I will update to see if O'Brien is trustable...
